What Students Need to Do: Students use taught social studies words when speaking, drawing, and writing. They explain a picture, event, place, or person with words that fit the topic.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students choose accurate topic words without copying a definition. They use each word in a sentence that shows its meaning and can explain their choice.
Common Misconceptions: Students may repeat a memorized definition but use the word incorrectly. They may confuse related words, such as past and present, or map and globe.
How to Assess It: Show a familiar social studies picture and provide three taught words. Ask students to choose two words and use each in a sentence about the picture.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards and word cards, then have them match each word to a picture and explain the match aloud.
Ask students, “Which three words best explain today’s topic, and what does each word help us understand?”
Play vocabulary charades using taught words such as citizen, vote, map, past, and present.
Take a school walk and ask students to identify examples of rules, leaders, maps, symbols, or community helpers using taught words.
