What Students Need to Do: Students use unit words accurately when they speak and write about social studies. They explain ideas with the words, rather than only listing or copying definitions.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student chooses relevant terms and uses them correctly in complete sentences. The student shows each word’s meaning through context in both a short talk and a written response.
Common Misconceptions: Students may copy a word without showing what it means. They may confuse related terms, such as citizen and government, or use a word correctly only when speaking.
How to Assess It: Give students three current unit words and this exit prompt: “Use two words in one written explanation, then read it aloud and explain one word.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards to sort under vocabulary labels, then have them explain each match aloud.
Ask students to write and discuss: “Which three words best explain today’s topic, and why?”
Play Vocabulary Detective by reading clue sentences while students identify the matching term and use it in a new sentence.
Show a local news photo and ask students to describe it using two current social studies terms.
