What Students Need to Do: Students tell what made an event happen and what happened next. They connect simple events in stories, classroom routines, and familiar situations.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly name the reason for an event and its result. They can explain the connection using a sentence such as, “The floor got wet because the cup spilled.”
Common Misconceptions: Students may reverse which event happened first. They may assume that one event caused another simply because it came next.
How to Assess It: Show a picture of a knocked-over cup beside a puddle. Ask, “What made the puddle, and what happened because the cup fell?”

Lesson moves

Set up a row of dominoes, tip the first one, and have students explain why the others fell.
Read a short picture book and ask, “What happened, and what made it happen?”
Give pairs matching cards, such as rain and an open umbrella, then have students find and explain each match.
Discuss a familiar routine, such as missing the bus after waking late, and name the reason and result.
