What Students Need to Do: Students identify what made a historical event happen and what changed because of it. They connect each claim with facts, dates, or details from a source.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can build a clear chain linking an event to its short-term and long-term results. They can explain which cause mattered most and support that choice with evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume that an earlier event caused every event that followed it. They often reverse causes and effects, name only one cause, or describe events without explaining the connection.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: “Why did western settlement grow after 1865, and what was one result? Use because and led to in your answer.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs Reconstruction event cards to match causes with effects, then ask them to defend one match with evidence.
Prompt students to write: “Which factor most influenced westward migration?” Require three sentences using because, evidence, and therefore.
Play Cause, Effect, or Both with event slips, and award points when teams sort and explain each slip correctly.
Map the immediate and long-term effects of a school schedule change, then compare that chain with a historical event.
