What Students Need to Do: Students identify what led to a geographic or historical development and what happened afterward. They explain each link using evidence from maps, texts, charts, or data.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can build an accurate sequence with more than one contributing factor and several results. The student can explain why the evidence supports each link.
Common Misconceptions: Students may reverse what happened first and what followed. They may assume that events occurring together are connected, or name only one factor when several contributed.
How to Assess It: Give students a short paragraph about drought, crop failure, rising food prices, and migration. Ask them to arrange the developments and explain two links using evidence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs cards showing drought, crop loss, food prices, and migration; students arrange them and add arrows labeled with explanations.
Ask: How can building a highway change where people live and work? Students cite two details from a map and short reading.
Play Cause, Effect, or Both: teams sort scenario cards, then defend one disputed choice with evidence.
Use a local flood or factory closure news story; students make a three-step chain linking the event to community changes.
