What Students Need to Do: Students identify an event or condition that helped produce a later outcome. They support each link with evidence and explain how several factors can interact.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a short source set, students accurately connect earlier events, decisions, or conditions to later results. They distinguish direct effects from indirect effects and explain their reasoning with facts.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume that an earlier event automatically caused everything that followed. They may name only one cause, confuse a result with a cause, or give a connection without supporting evidence.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: “Choose one event from today’s lesson. State one cause and one effect, then cite one fact that supports each link.”

Lesson moves

Give groups event cards from the American Revolution. Students arrange them, connect causes to effects with yarn, and label each connection.
Ask, “Which cause mattered most in producing the event, and what evidence makes it more important than the others?”
Play Cause, Effect, or Both with scenario cards. Teams classify each card and defend their choice in one sentence.
Have students trace how a school schedule change affects sleep, transportation, clubs, and family routines, then compare direct and indirect effects.
