What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use drawing, dictation, and early writing to make texts for different readers and reasons. They plan an idea, create a draft, reread it, and make a useful change.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name who the text is for and what it should do. The student can create a clear message, reread it, add or change details, and fix a simple error with support.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the first draft is finished, or that revising only means correcting letters. They may add unrelated details or worry about perfect spelling before recording ideas.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Use drawing and words to tell a classmate how to care for our class plant. Reread it, then add or change one helpful detail.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use picture cards to plan, draft, and revise directions for washing hands, moving each card through labeled process trays.

  2. Ask, “Who will read your birthday invitation, and what must they know?” Then have students draw and write the invitation.

  3. Play Revision Detective: partners inspect a simple class message and earn a token for each useful detail they suggest adding.

  4. Create signs for classroom supply bins, test them with another class, then revise any sign that causes confusion.
