What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a plan, drawing, or class notes into a first draft. They choose words and simple sentences that share connected ideas. They add details that fit their purpose and audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student creates a drawing and connected words or sentences that match the purpose. The draft includes useful details and a simple craft choice, such as a label, sound word, or repeated phrase.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy every idea from their plan instead of choosing details that fit the purpose. They may write labels or facts that do not connect. They may think a first draft must be perfect and resist adding words or changing a sentence.
How to Assess It
- Say, “Write a note telling classmates what to bring for rainy-day recess.” Look for one or two connected details and a clear word or phrase for classmates.

Ways to Teach It
Give students picture cards and word cards to sort, then use chosen details to draw, label, and write a first draft.
Use the prompt, “Tell a new student about recess,” and have students draw and write details that help that audience.
Play Detail Detective: partners read a draft, point to one helpful detail, and suggest one word or phrase to add.
Have students create a lunchroom reminder for classmates, using a clear picture, labels, and one polite sentence.
