What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a simple plan into a first draft that makes sense from start to finish. They choose details, words, and sentence patterns that fit their reason for writing and their reader.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a connected draft with a clear purpose and enough details for the reader. The student chooses fitting words and uses a craft move, such as dialogue, sound words, or description.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a first draft must be perfect, so they stop often to fix spelling. They may copy ideas from a plan without connecting them. Some add interesting words that do not fit the audience or purpose.
How to Assess It
- Post three facts about indoor recess. Ask students to draft a note to a new classmate using two facts, a friendly greeting, and a clear ending.

Ways to Teach It
Give students three picture cards to order, then have them use the sequence to write a beginning, middle, and ending.
Ask, “How would you tell this story to a friend versus the principal?” then list words that fit each audience.
Play Word Swap: students replace one plain word in a draft with a more exact or lively word from a card deck.
Have students draft a classroom announcement for families, including the event, date, needed items, and a friendly closing.
