What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread their own drawings and writing to check whether the message does its intended job. They listen to feedback and choose a change that makes the message clearer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name the job of a piece, such as telling a story or giving information. The student can point to a helpful part and suggest one change that better serves the reader.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think longer or neater writing always works better. They may focus only on spelling, or make every suggested change without checking whether it supports their goal.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a recent drawing-and-writing piece. Ask, "What did you want your reader to know or do, and what would you change to make that clearer?"

Ways to Teach It
Students use green or red cubes to rate whether their drawing and words send the intended message, then revise one part.
Ask partners, "What do you want your reader to know, and which part helps the reader know it?"
Play Match the Message: students pair sample texts with tell, ask, or explain cards, then name one helpful change.
Students make a classroom sign, such as "Wash your hands," and classmates decide whether its words and picture give a clear direction.
