What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students reread their drafts and use feedback to judge whether the writing does its intended job for the audience. They identify effective parts and choose revisions that support their writing goal.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain how a detail, word choice, or organization supports the intended purpose. The student uses helpful feedback to make a focused revision and explains why the change improves the draft.

Common Misconceptions

Students may check only spelling and punctuation instead of judging whether the message works. They may accept every suggestion or add details that do not support the writing goal.

How to Assess It

Give students a paragraph meant to convince classmates to recycle. Ask them to circle one effective sentence and write one change that would better meet the goal.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students two colored highlighters to mark draft parts that support the writing goal and parts that need revision.

  2. Ask, "What should your reader think, feel, or do, and which sentence best helps that happen?"

  3. Play Feedback Sort: teams place comment cards under Helps the Goal, Needs Clarifying, or Does Not Fit.

  4. Have students revise a school event announcement after classmates identify missing details parents would need.
