What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a simple plan to choose and order ideas before composing. They connect each drawing, word, or fact to the topic and leave out details that do not help.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose pictures, words, or facts that clearly fit their topic. Their drawing, dictation, or writing follows the order of their plan and includes the strongest details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add a favorite detail even when it does not fit the topic. They may also make a plan, then ignore its order when drawing, dictating, or writing.
How to Assess It
- Give students three picture details about a class trip, including one unrelated detail. Ask them to cross out the unrelated detail and place the other two in story order.

Ways to Teach It
Give students picture cards and a three-box planner, then have them choose and order details for a story about recess.
Ask, “Which detail helps the reader understand your topic best?” Students name a choice and explain why it belongs.
Play Detail Detective by reading a topic and three details, then students hold up a card for the detail that does not belong.
Plan a class note about a school event, choosing the details families need most and placing them in a clear order.
