What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students sort notes and ideas into the sections of a writing plan. They choose details that best support each section and leave out information that is off-topic, repeated, or weak.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students place notes under the correct headings in an organizer. They select strong details, remove repeated or unrelated information, and explain how each choice supports the writing plan.

Common Misconceptions

Students may include every fact they find, even when it does not support the main idea. They may choose an interesting detail because it sounds exciting, or place a useful detail in the wrong section.

How to Assess It

Give students a three-part outline and six detail cards. Ask them to place four cards, remove two weak or unrelated cards, and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs sort fact cards into labeled sections of a paper organizer, then remove cards that do not support any section.

  2. Ask students to write which of three details best supports a given paragraph heading and explain why.

  3. Play Detail Draft, where teams draw note cards and earn points by placing each card correctly or rejecting it with a reason.

  4. Use a school event flyer to identify which details belong under time, location, activities, and reminders.
