What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use an organizer to decide where ideas and details belong before drafting. They choose information that best fits their purpose and audience, leaving out details that do not help.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given notes and an organizer, students place each relevant idea in the section where it belongs and mark the strongest details. Their draft follows the plan, includes useful information, and leaves out unrelated ideas.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every idea as equally useful or choose a fun fact that does not fit the topic. They may list notes in the order found instead of placing them in planned sections.

How to Assess It

Give students six notes about caring for a class plant, including one unrelated note. Ask them to place each useful note in an organizer and star the two strongest details.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs labeled organizer mats and detail cards, then have them sort each card into the best section and remove unrelated details.

  2. Ask, “Which detail would help a new student most?” Students choose one detail and explain their choice in writing.

  3. Play Detail Detective by reading topic cards and possible details while students earn points for identifying the best fit and explaining why.

  4. Plan a short guide for the school library, selecting details that would be most useful to a first-time visitor.
