What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan, draft, review, revise, and edit different kinds of writing. They adjust their process based on the purpose, audience, and task rather than following one fixed sequence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select useful planning and drafting methods for the task. They use feedback to strengthen content and structure, then edit for clarity and correctness. They can explain why they made specific changes.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat revision as fixing spelling and punctuation instead of improving ideas, evidence, and organization. They may follow the same steps in the same order for every task. Some assume a first draft should already be polished.

How to Assess It

Give students a short writing scenario and rough paragraph. Ask them to name their next two steps, make one meaningful revision, and explain how it helps the audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed draft to cut apart, reorder, and revise for a specific audience named on a task card.

  2. Ask students to describe one recent revision that improved meaning, then explain why it was more than an edit.

  3. Run a revision relay where teams rotate through stations for focus, evidence, organization, sentence clarity, and conventions.

  4. Have students rewrite a school event announcement as an email to families and as a social media post for classmates.
