What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide why they are writing and what result they want. They identify a specific reader, then set a clear goal for the finished piece.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name who will read a piece and what they want that reader to think, feel, or do. They set a clear goal that guides their choices and can explain those choices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name “everyone” as the reader instead of identifying a specific group. They may confuse the topic with the reason for writing or set a goal that cannot be checked.
How to Assess It
- Give students a school lunch topic. Ask them to name a specific reader, explain the intended effect, and write one measurable writing goal.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sample texts and audience cards, then have them match each text to its likely reader and intended effect.
Ask students to explain how a message about phone use would change for a principal, friend, or younger student.
Play Audience Switch by giving students one topic and challenging them to draft openings for three different readers.
Have students plan an email requesting a school change, naming the recipient, desired response, and one writing goal.https://lessonmakerpro.com
