What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Before drafting, students decide why they are writing and who will read it. They set a simple goal for what the reader should learn, feel, or do.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name the intended reader and explain what they want their writing to accomplish. They choose details, words, and a text type that fit that reader and reason.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name the teacher as the reader for every assignment. They may confuse the topic with the reason for writing or set goals about length and neatness only.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: You will write a note asking the principal for a longer recess. Name the reader, your reason for writing, and one writing goal.

Ways to Teach It
Sort writing-sample cards, such as an invitation, directions, and a review, with matching reader and reason cards.
Discuss how a birthday invitation would change for a classmate versus a grandparent, then write one sentence for each reader.
Spin reader and reason wheels, then earn a point by saying an opening sentence that fits both.
Plan a thank-you note to cafeteria staff by naming the readers, intended result, and two details they would appreciate.
