What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Before drafting, students decide what they want their writing to accomplish and set clear goals for the piece. They identify likely readers and plan suitable content, tone, and detail.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a writing situation, a student can name the intended readers, desired result, and two specific goals. The student can explain how those choices will shape content, tone, and organization.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often name the topic instead of explaining what the writing should accomplish. They may list “my teacher” as the audience by default or set vague goals such as “write well.”
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “You will write about a proposed longer lunch period. Name your audience, explain your intended result, and list two writing goals.”

Ways to Teach It
Sort six sample texts by intended result and audience, then highlight words or details that support each choice.
Discuss how a message about missing homework would change when written to a friend, teacher, or family member.
Draw one audience card and one purpose card, then write an opening sentence that fits both.
Plan an email to the principal proposing a school improvement, including the desired response and two drafting goals.
