What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide why they are writing, what they want the finished piece to accomplish, and who will read it. They use those choices to guide content, tone, and word choice.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can name a specific reader and explain the intended result of the piece. The student sets a clear goal, such as using three facts to persuade families to recycle.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name “the teacher” as the reader for every assignment. They may confuse the topic with the reason for writing, or set a vague goal such as “write well.”

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “You are writing about school lunches. Name your reader, explain what you want the piece to accomplish, and list one writing goal.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs writing-situation cards and sticky notes, then have them label the intended reader, desired result, and one measurable writing goal.

  2. Ask students to explain how a letter about longer recess would change when written to the principal instead of a friend.

  3. Play Audience Match by having teams pair sample paragraphs with reader cards and justify each match using clues from the language.

  4. Examine a restaurant menu, public sign, and product review, then identify who each text addresses and what response it seeks.
