What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn notes, evidence, and ideas into an organized first draft. They choose language, sentence patterns, and craft moves that fit their purpose and intended readers. Their choices should create a clear effect.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student creates a complete first draft with a clear purpose and audience. Ideas and source information fit together logically. Word choice, sentence structure, and craft moves support the intended effect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a first draft as a polished final copy or copy notes without connecting them. They may choose impressive words that do not fit the audience. They may add imagery, dialogue, or rhetorical questions without a clear purpose.
How to Assess It
- Give students three facts about later school start times. Ask them to draft one paragraph for the school board, then underline one purposeful word choice and label one craft technique.
