What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn notes, facts, and ideas into a connected first draft. They choose language, sentence patterns, and craft moves that suit their reason for writing and their readers.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes a complete first draft with ideas and source information connected clearly. Word choice, sentence structure, and craft moves fit the purpose and intended readers.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a first draft as either a final copy or a careless list of ideas. They may drop facts into the draft without explaining connections. Some choose impressive words or craft moves that do not fit the reader or purpose.

How to Assess It

Give students three notes about cafeteria food waste. Ask them to write a six-sentence opening for families that uses two notes, a strong phrase, and one craft move.

Lesson moves

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups fact cards and idea cards to arrange, connect with transition strips, and turn into a first draft.

  2. Compare two openings on the same topic, then explain which one better fits younger readers and why.

  3. Play Audience Switch by drawing audience cards and revising one sentence to suit each new reader.

  4. Write a school announcement about a real event, using details and wording that will interest classmates and prompt action.
