What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn their plans, notes, and sources into a complete first draft. They choose details, wording, sentence patterns, and techniques that fit their goal and intended readers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The first draft has a clear direction, connected ideas, relevant details, and language suited to its readers. The student can point to a sentence or technique and explain its purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a first draft as a polished final copy or simply copy their notes in order. They may add fancy words or techniques that distract from the purpose and audience.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: “Draft one paragraph convincing your principal to add a five-minute passing period. Include one fact, a clear reason, and audience-appropriate wording.”
