What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students proofread a draft and correct errors in grammar, usage, sentence boundaries, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. They use reference tools when needed and check that corrections preserve the intended meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can find and correct errors in sentence structure, grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Their final copy is clean, consistent, and ready for a reader.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse editing with revising ideas or organization. They may trust spell-check without checking homophones, fragments, run-ons, or incorrect word choices. Some correct errors inconsistently or add commas wherever they pause.

How to Assess It

Give students a six-sentence paragraph containing a fragment, run-on, spelling error, capitalization error, and two punctuation errors. Ask them to mark each correction and rewrite the paragraph.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a printed paragraph and colored pens to mark sentence boundaries, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and grammar before producing a clean copy.

  2. Display two versions of a paragraph, then ask students to explain which edits improve correctness and why.

  3. Run an editing relay where teams correct one error at a time in sentences posted around the room.

  4. Have students proofread a school announcement or email, then prepare a polished version for a real audience.
