What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students proofread a complete draft and correct errors in grammar, usage, sentence structure, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. They preserve the writer’s meaning while making the language clear and consistent.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students produce a clean draft with correct sentence boundaries, grammar, usage, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. They can explain key corrections and apply the same conventions throughout the text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse editing with revising ideas or reorganizing paragraphs. They may trust spell-check to catch homophones, missing words, fragments, and incorrect punctuation. Some correct errors by instinct but cannot apply the same rule consistently.
How to Assess It
- Give students a six-sentence paragraph containing a fragment, run-on, agreement error, homophone error, and two punctuation errors. Ask them to mark and correct all six.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed paragraph and colored pencils to mark sentence boundaries, agreement errors, punctuation, spelling, and corrected wording.
Ask students which three errors most damage a writer’s credibility, then support each choice with a specific example.
Run an editing relay where teams correct one error per turn, label the rule, and pass the draft.
Have students edit a school announcement or club email before comparing their version with a polished model.
