What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify why they are writing and who will read the finished text. They choose a mode, genre, and organizational pattern, then map out how ideas will unfold.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can choose a suitable format and organizational pattern for a specific purpose and group of readers. They can outline a clear sequence of sections. They can also explain why their plan works better than another option.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat mode, genre, and structure as the same choice. They may default to a five-paragraph essay or organize ideas before considering purpose and readers. Some choose a familiar format even when it does not fit the task.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Convince the principal to add a longer lunch period. Name the mode, genre, and structure you would use, sketch the sections, and explain one choice.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups purpose and audience cards, plus genre and structure cards, then have them build a match and arrange an outline.
Ask students to compare two plans for the same topic and write which better serves a named audience, citing two design choices.
Play Plan Swap: partners draw a purpose and audience, draft a five-part plan, then revise after swapping cards.
Use a school announcement, family email, and student petition to trace how purpose and readers shape organization.
