What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Before drafting, students name who will read the piece and what they want that reader to think, learn, or do. They choose a fitting form, then sketch an order for the ideas.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a purpose and audience, students select a suitable form and explain their choice. Their plan uses a clear structure, such as time order, grouped facts, or an opinion with reasons.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a form because they like it, not because it fits the reader and purpose. They may list ideas without deciding where each idea belongs.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “Teach second graders how to care for a class pet.” Students choose a form, name the audience, and outline three ordered sections.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs purpose, audience, form, and structure cards; have them build three matching sets and explain each match.

  2. Ask, “Would a principal need a comic, letter, or report about playground litter?” Students choose one and defend its structure.

  3. Play Plan It Fast: reveal an audience and purpose, then teams race to sketch a fitting beginning, middle, and ending.

  4. Plan a school lunch survey report for the cafeteria manager, grouping results and placing recommendations last.
