What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a suitable text form for a clear purpose and audience, then plan and draft. They reread, use feedback, revise ideas and organization, and edit conventions.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can use notes or an organizer to produce a complete draft for a named reader. The student makes meaningful revisions, corrects grade-level errors, and explains how changes improve the text.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the first draft as finished or think revision means fixing spelling only. They may add unrelated details, ignore the audience, or edit while drafting and lose their ideas.

How to Assess It

Give students a short draft about a class pet. Ask them to make one revision for meaning and two edits, then label each change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips from a mixed-up paragraph, then have them arrange, expand, and edit the final paragraph.

  2. Compare two invitations for different audiences, then write which choices fit a friend and which fit the principal.

  3. Run a revision relay where teams draw add, remove, move, or replace cards and improve a shared draft.

  4. Have students write playground directions for second graders, test them with classmates, then revise any step that causes confusion.
