What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide who will read their writing and what they want the writing to accomplish. They set a specific goal before drafting, such as explaining clearly or persuading a reader.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name a specific reader, such as classmates, families, or the principal. They can explain their reason for writing and choose a clear goal that fits that reader.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a topic instead of explaining why they are writing. They may say the audience is “everyone” or choose a goal unrelated to the reader and purpose.
How to Assess It
- Give this prompt: “You are writing about a new playground rule. Name your reader, explain why you are writing, and set one writing goal.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups audience, purpose, and topic cards to match, then have them explain why each set belongs together.
Ask students to explain how a letter about longer recess would change when written to a friend or the principal.
Play Audience Detective by reading short samples and awarding points for correctly identifying the likely reader and reason for writing.
Have students plan a cafeteria suggestion note by naming the cafeteria manager as the reader and choosing one clear writing goal.
