What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Before drafting, students decide what they want readers to think, feel, know, or do. They identify specific readers and set clear targets for content, tone, and effect.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can write a planning statement that names the intended reader, desired effect, and two measurable goals. The student selects tone, evidence, details, and format that fit that plan.

Common Misconceptions

Students often name a topic instead of explaining the result they want from the writing. They may call the audience “everyone” or set vague goals such as “make it good.”

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “You are proposing a later school start time to the school board. Name your intended result, audience, and two specific writing goals.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups audience envelopes and sample openings to sort, then have them rewrite one opening that does not fit its assigned audience.

  2. Ask students how a request for new library books would change when written to a principal, classmates, or local business owner.

  3. Play Audience Switch: students draw a purpose and audience card, then write a fitting opening in three minutes.

  4. Have students draft a real announcement for a school event, naming who should respond and what action the message should produce.
