What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide why they are writing and what they want the writing to accomplish. They identify the specific readers they want to reach. They set clear goals that guide their choices.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can state a clear reason for writing and name the readers they want to reach. They set specific goals, such as including three facts or answering a likely reader question. Their goals fit the purpose and audience.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a topic instead of explaining why they are writing. They often list “everyone” or “my teacher” as the audience. Goals may be vague, such as “write well,” rather than specific and checkable.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: You are writing about school lunch. Name a specific audience, explain your purpose, and list two writing goals you could check.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have groups sort writing scenario cards by purpose, then add a target audience and one goal on sticky notes.

  2. Ask students to explain how a message about later school start times would change for parents, classmates, and the principal.

  3. Play Audience Match, where students pair anonymous writing samples with audience cards and defend each match using clues from the text.

  4. Students plan a flyer for a school event by naming its audience, purpose, and two goals before drafting.
