What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide why they are drawing, dictating, or writing, such as to tell, explain, invite, or thank. They name who will see the message and what they want that person to know or do.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain, “I am making this invitation so my family knows about our class party.” The student includes a clear picture, label, or sentence that helps that audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a topic, such as dogs, instead of a reason for writing. They may say “everyone” is the reader or ignore what the chosen reader needs.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank half-sheet and say, “Make a message for the principal about one thing our class needs.” Ask, “Who is this for, and what do you want the principal to know or do?”

Ways to Teach It
Sort picture cards showing a thank-you note, party invitation, and how-to page by who would read each and why.
Show a playground poster and ask, “Who should read this, and what should they know or do after reading it?”
Play Audience Match: students pair purpose cards, such as invite or explain, with audience cards and tell one fitting message.
Create labels for classroom supply bins, then name the readers and explain how the labels should help them.
