What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide why they are writing and what they want the writing to accomplish. They identify who will read it and use that reader to guide their choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name a specific reader before they begin writing. They can explain whether they want to inform, ask, thank, entertain, or persuade that reader. Their planned message fits both choices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a topic instead of explaining what they want their writing to accomplish. They may assume the reader is always the teacher. They may not adjust their message for different readers.
How to Assess It
- Give students the prompt, “Write a note about our class pet.” Before drafting, have them complete: “My reader is __. I want my reader to __.”

Ways to Teach It
Sort six sample notes into inform, ask, and thank piles, then match each note to a pictured reader.
Discuss how a lost mitten note would change for a friend, teacher, or principal, then write one audience choice.
Play Audience Match by drawing purpose and reader cards, then orally state a fitting writing goal before earning a point.
Create a reminder sign for families about library day, naming the reader and intended response before writing.
