What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide what they want their writing to accomplish and who will read it before drafting. They set specific goals, then choose details, tone, and format for that reader.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can create a clear purpose statement, describe the intended reader, and set two measurable writing goals. They can explain how their audience shapes tone, details, evidence, and format.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a topic instead of a purpose, or choose “everyone” as the audience. They may set vague goals like “make it good” or overlook how audience affects evidence, tone, and organization.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Write a proposal for a later school start time.” Students name the audience, purpose, two specific goals, and one audience-based writing choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs audience cards and a school event topic, then have them build a purpose statement and two writing goals with sticky notes.

  2. Ask students to explain how a message about missing work would change when written to a friend, teacher, or principal.

  3. Play Audience Switch by calling out new readers while students revise one sentence for tone, detail, and word choice.

  4. Have students draft an email requesting a school improvement, naming the recipient, desired response, and two goals before writing.
