What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students reread their drawings, labels, or sentences and decide what would help a reader understand. They add, remove, reorder, or replace ideas and words after self-checking or hearing feedback.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can reread a draft and identify one part that could be clearer or more interesting. The student makes a useful change and gives a simple reason for it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think revising means fixing handwriting, capitals, or spelling only. They may add an unrelated detail, change everything after feedback, or believe feedback means their work is wrong.

How to Assess It

Ask: “Reread your draft, make one change that helps your reader, then circle the change.” Have students explain why the change helps.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture and sentence strips from a short story, then have them reorder or replace one strip to improve the story.

  2. Ask partners, “What part did you understand best, and what would you like to know more about?” before writers revise.

  3. Play Revision Detective by giving students simple drafts and cards that say add, remove, reorder, or replace.

  4. Have students revise a classroom sign or invitation so families can understand the message, date, place, and needed items.
