What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft, identify weak spots, and make purposeful changes using their own judgment and feedback from others. They revise ideas, details, organization, word choice, and writing techniques to better reach the reader.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select useful feedback and make meaningful changes to a draft’s content, order, details, language, or style. They can compare versions and explain how a change improves clarity or impact.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often think revision means fixing spelling, punctuation, or handwriting. They may accept every suggestion without judging it, or replace words without improving meaning, structure, or reader impact.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Show one original passage, one piece of feedback, and your revised passage. Explain in one sentence how the revision helps the reader.

Ways to Teach It
Print and cut apart a draft, then rearrange paragraphs and add transition notes before gluing the improved sequence onto paper.
Discuss which peer comment would most improve a sample draft, then write two sentences defending the choice with evidence from the text.
Play Revision Relay: teams draw feedback cards and revise a shared paragraph for ideas, organization, word choice, or craft.
Act as school newsletter editors by revising a class event announcement for clear details, logical order, precise words, and reader interest.
