What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide what kind of text will best share their message with a particular person or group. They plan where pictures, words, and ideas will go before creating it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can choose a useful format, such as a card, list, sign, or story, for a given reader and purpose. They can sketch ideas in a clear order and explain their choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a favorite format without thinking about the purpose or reader. They may start drawing or writing immediately, then place ideas in a confusing order.
How to Assess It
- Give this prompt: “Help a substitute understand our morning routine.” Have students choose a story, invitation, or ordered picture list, then sketch three steps.

Ways to Teach It
Sort invitations, recipes, stories, and signs by purpose and audience, then make a three-box picture plan for one example.
Ask, “Would you tell a friend and the principal the same way?” Have partners explain what they would change.
Draw purpose and audience cards, then race to choose a matching format and arrange three picture cards in a useful order.
Plan a thank-you card for a cafeteria worker by deciding what belongs on the front, inside, and signature line.
