What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide what kind of text will best fit their reason for writing and who will read it. They plan the parts and order before drafting.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose a fitting form, such as a story, note, list, or how-to text. They explain their choice and make a simple plan with parts in a clear order.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a story for every writing task, even when a list, note, or how-to text fits better. They may name an audience but forget to include the details or order that reader needs.

How to Assess It

Give this prompt: “Teach a kindergartner how to wash their hands.” Ask students to choose a text type and sketch how they will organize it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups picture cards for a story, letter, list, and how-to text, then have them sort and order each set.

  2. Ask, “How would your writing change if you explained recess rules to a kindergartner instead of the principal?”

  3. Play Purpose Match by pairing audience and purpose cards with story, note, list, or how-to cards.

  4. Plan a note to a family member, including a greeting, clear message, needed details, and name.
