What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students apply grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling rules when reading and writing. They analyze how sentence choices affect meaning, then revise errors in their own and others' texts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write clear sentences with consistent verb tense, correct agreement, clear pronouns, and accurate punctuation. They can find errors in a draft, make effective corrections, and explain how those changes improve clarity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat fragments as complete sentences or join clauses with only a comma. They may also miss subject-verb agreement, unclear pronouns, and shifts in verb tense. Some correct errors by sound alone without considering sentence meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-sentence paragraph containing a fragment, comma splice, agreement error, and pronoun error. Ask them to correct each error and explain one change.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with fragments, run-ons, and complete sentences, then have them sort and revise each incorrect example.
Display two versions of a paragraph and ask students to explain in writing how the grammar and punctuation change clarity.
Play an editing relay where teams correct one marked sentence at a time and name the rule used.
Have students edit a school announcement for capitalization, punctuation, agreement, and pronoun use before posting a polished version.
