What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students blend quoted evidence into their own complete sentences. They use correct capitalization and place quotation marks, commas, citations, and final punctuation in the right spots.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can write a complete sentence that smoothly introduces evidence from a text. Quotation marks, commas, capitalization, citations, and final punctuation are placed correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often put the final period before the citation or place the citation inside the quotation marks. They may also omit the comma after a signal phrase or capitalize a quoted fragment incorrectly.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage by Lopez labeled page 4. Ask them to write one claim sentence that introduces a quotation and ends with the correct citation, (Lopez 4).

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word, punctuation, quotation, and citation cards to arrange into one correctly punctuated evidence sentence.
Ask students to explain why the period comes after the parenthetical citation in a model sentence.
Run a correction relay where teams repair punctuation errors in evidence sentences posted around the room.
Compare a news article quotation with a student evidence sentence, then rewrite both using parenthetical citations.
