What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students incorporate quotations and paraphrased evidence into complete sentences. They use correct capitalization, punctuation, quotation marks, and citation parentheses around that evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students blend quoted words into their own sentences without punctuation errors. They place quotation marks, commas, end punctuation, and citation parentheses correctly and consistently.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may capitalize a quoted fragment as if it begins a new sentence. They may place commas, periods, or citation parentheses incorrectly, or add quotation marks around a paraphrase.
How to Assess It
- Give students one unpunctuated sentence containing a lead-in, a quotation, and a citation. Ask them to rewrite it with correct capitalization and punctuation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with claims, quotations, and citations, then have them arrange and punctuate each complete sentence.
Ask students to explain how punctuation changes between a full-sentence quotation and a quoted fragment embedded within their own sentence.
Run a punctuation relay where teams correct projected evidence sentences and earn one point for each accurate correction.
Have students edit a sample online book review so every quotation and citation follows standard punctuation rules.
