What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the job a word or word group does in a sentence, such as naming, receiving action, renaming, or adding detail. They write and revise sentences so words, phrases, and clauses perform those jobs correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a sentence, a student can mark the complete subject, direct object, predicate nominative, and modifiers, then explain each job. The student can replace a single word with an accurate phrase or clause without breaking the sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often call any noun after a verb a direct object, including a predicate nominative after a linking verb. They may confuse the complete subject with its head noun or attach a modifier to the wrong word.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Label the subject, direct object, predicate nominative, and one modifier in these sentences: “The student in red handed Maya a note. Maya became the class captain.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students color-coded word and phrase strips to build sentences, then have them label the job each strip performs.
Compare “Leo kicked the ball” and “Leo became captain,” then explain why the nouns after the verbs do different jobs.
Play function swap: teams replace an underlined subject, object, predicate nominative, or modifier with a longer phrase while keeping the sentence grammatical.
Rewrite a school announcement to include a clear subject, direct object, predicate nominative, and two useful modifiers.
