What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how a word, phrase, or clause functions within a sentence, such as serving as a subject, object, complement, or modifier. They create and revise sentences so selected parts perform specific jobs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can label subjects, direct objects, predicate nominatives, and modifiers in varied sentences. The student can also write or revise a sentence so a chosen word, phrase, or clause performs a named function.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse a word’s part of speech with its job in a sentence. They may label an object of a preposition as a direct object or confuse a predicate nominative with a direct object. They may also overlook phrases and clauses that act as modifiers.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: In "The novel that Ana recommended became our class favorite," underline the complete subject, circle the predicate nominative, and box the clause modifying "novel." Explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs color-coded word, phrase, and clause cards, then have them build sentences and label each card’s job.
Ask students to explain how "the captain" functions differently in "The captain waved" and "Mia became the captain."
Run a sentence-function relay where teams identify subjects, direct objects, predicate nominatives, and modifiers in projected sentences.
Have students annotate a school announcement, marking phrases and clauses that name actors, receive actions, rename subjects, or add details.
