What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine the job each word group performs within a sentence, not just what kind of word group it is. They use that knowledge to build clear, complete sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can mark the job performed by a word group in a complex sentence and explain the evidence for their choice. They can revise a sentence so each word group has a clear purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every noun is a subject and every noun after a verb is a direct object. They often confuse predicate nominatives with direct objects and label phrases by form rather than by their job in the sentence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: In “What Maya designed became the team’s winning logo,” underline the complete subject, box the predicate nominative, and explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs color-coded word, phrase, and clause cards to build sentences, then place function labels beneath each sentence part.
Ask students to explain how the noun phrase in “Jordan became captain” differs from the noun phrase in “Jordan greeted the captain.”
Run a sentence-function relay where teams sort sentence strips under subject, object, complement, or modifier headings and defend one choice.
Have students edit a school announcement by adding a clear subject, precise modifiers, and a complement that completes the meaning.
