What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use three dots to show that words are missing from a quotation or that a thought trails off. They keep the original meaning clear.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students place an ellipsis where words have been removed from a quotation. They can also use one to show a thought trailing off without confusing it with ordinary punctuation.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use more or fewer than three dots or add ellipses whenever they want a dramatic pause. They may also remove quoted words that change the speaker’s meaning.

How to Assess It

Give this prompt: Rewrite “The old bridge, which had survived three floods, finally closed” by omitting the descriptive clause and using an ellipsis. Explain whether the meaning stayed accurate.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sentence strips, have them remove a middle phrase, then place an ellipsis card where the missing words belonged.

  2. Ask students to compare a full quotation with a shortened version and explain whether the ellipsis preserves the speaker’s meaning.

  3. Run an ellipsis sort with cards showing correct omissions, trailing thoughts, random dots, and missing end punctuation.

  4. Compare a short news quotation with its full transcript, then mark the words the reporter omitted with an ellipsis.
