What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students join two closely related independent clauses with a semicolon. They can add however, therefore, or another conjunctive adverb with correct punctuation. They also use this pattern in sentences containing a dependent clause.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can confirm that each side of the semicolon is a complete clause. The student can create compound and compound-complex sentences, with correct punctuation around conjunctive adverbs.

Common Misconceptions

Students may place a semicolon between a complete clause and a fragment. They may create a comma splice before however or forget the comma after a conjunctive adverb.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Combine these ideas into one sentence using however: “Because the rain stopped, we started practice. The field remained slippery.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with two independent clauses, one dependent clause, semicolon cards, and adverb cards to build correctly punctuated sentences.

  2. Ask students to explain why however cannot repair a comma splice, then rewrite the sentence correctly.

  3. Run a punctuation relay where teams correct sentence cards containing comma splices, misplaced semicolons, and missing commas after conjunctive adverbs.

  4. Have students revise two lines from a school announcement, using a semicolon once alone and once with therefore or however.
