What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify where each full item begins and ends in a list whose items contain commas. They keep commas within items and place semicolons between the items.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly punctuates an unfamiliar sentence with three detailed list items. The student can explain that semicolons mark item boundaries and can fix misplaced or missing marks.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often use semicolons in every list, even when simple commas are enough. Some replace all commas with semicolons or insert one after every descriptive phrase. Others think each list item must be a complete sentence.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite and punctuate this sentence: “Pack apples, sliced thinly, crackers, preferably whole grain, and cheese, cut into cubes.”
