What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students add commas to make lists of three or more items clear. They also use commas in dates, addresses, letter greetings, and sign-offs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly punctuate a list of three or more items. They also place commas correctly in a written date, address, greeting, and sign-off without teacher help.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may put a comma after every item, including after the final word. They may omit the comma after a greeting or sign-off. They may also confuse where commas belong in dates and addresses.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short note containing a list, date, address, greeting, and sign-off, then ask them to add every missing comma.
