What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students ask questions about the past, examine primary and secondary sources, and identify each source’s author, context, and purpose. They compare evidence and use it to support a conclusion.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can separate fact from opinion, note bias, and explain why one source may be more reliable than another. They cite details from multiple sources when answering a historical question.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume every primary source is accurate or that bias makes a source useless. They may also form a conclusion from one source or confuse evidence with personal opinion.

How to Assess It

Give students two short accounts of the same event. Ask them to identify one difference, choose the stronger source, and support their choice with evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a mystery source packet with a photo, letter, map, and artifact image, then have them infer what happened.

  2. Ask students to write which source they would trust most about an ancient battle and explain their choice with two details.

  3. Play Source Sort by having teams classify cards as primary or secondary sources and justify each placement.

  4. Compare two reports of a recent school event, then identify differing details, possible bias, and evidence that could verify each claim.
