What Students Need to Do: Students read dates and arrange events from earliest to latest. They use a timeline to tell what happened before, after, or between other events.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given mixed event cards, students place each event correctly on a dated timeline. They explain their choices using dates and timeline positions.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume the largest date happened last, which causes errors with BCE dates. They may also overlook whether a timeline runs horizontally or vertically. Some confuse an event’s date with its duration.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Order these from earliest to latest: first Olympic Games, 776 BCE; Roman Republic begins, 509 BCE; Augustus becomes emperor, 27 BCE; Western Roman Empire falls, 476 CE.

Lesson moves

Give groups a rope, date labels, and event cards, then have them build a floor timeline and check one another’s placements.
Ask students to write which of three events happened first, then support the answer with dates and position words.
Have pairs race to sort shuffled event cards, then award one point for each correct placement and explanation.
Use dated photos from the school or community to create a timeline showing how one place changed over time.
