What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place major Florida events in order using dates and a timeline scale. They explain which events came before, after, or between other events.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately sequence events such as Spanish exploration, the founding of St. Augustine, statehood, and the space program. They use timeline labels and spacing to show when events occurred.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may arrange events by importance or familiarity instead of date. They may place larger years earlier or use equal spacing when events are decades apart.
How to Assess It
- Give students these four event cards: Ponce de León arrives, 1513; St. Augustine is founded, 1565; Florida becomes a state, 1845; Apollo 11 launches, 1969. Ask them to draw and label a timeline in correct order.

Ways to Teach It
Have students match event cards with date cards, then attach them to a floor timeline made with string and clothespins.
Ask students to write three sentences explaining what changed in Florida between two selected events on a class timeline.
Play Timeline Relay, where teams race to place shuffled Florida history cards in order and check them against a date key.
Add the founding date of a local landmark or town to a Florida timeline and compare it with two statewide events.
